The construction of a commercial project is traditionally an expensive and lengthy affair. Building owners and project managers search for any solutions that will spare them valuable time while lessening overall costs.
SFA Saniflo Inc. is the only manufacturer of its kind in North America, offering a complete line of macerating toilet, grinder, and drain-pump systems for residential and commercial applications. Founded in the late 1950s in France, the company’s goal has always been to provide solutions that allow for easier plumbing installations, especially where it is impossible or cost-prohibitive to install conventional plumbing fixtures that require below-floor drainage.

Historic Yukon Hotel | Sanicubic 2 VX Duplex Vortex System
The venerable Edgewater Hotel in Whitehorse, Yukon, overlooks the majestic Yukon River, with a lineage tracing back to the Klondike Gold Rush [1896 – 1899]. This historic hotel needed an upgrade, but posed some unique problems.
According to Bryan Albanese, owner/operator of Albanese Mechanical, a plumbing and mechanical contractor also located in Whitehorse, the job entailed rerouting drainage from a cast iron soil pipe stack to the side of the building, while also picking up the drainage from the three new wine-bar washrooms.
Time is of the essence in the hospitality industry. Ultimately, hotel ownership’s main concern was to keep the hotel operational and downtime to a minimum during renovations.
Conventional plumbing drainage was not feasible. Albanese needed a cost-effective alternative to pump black and gray waste water from the newly added wine-bar washroom and hotel-suite bathrooms to the existing main drain line at the far side of the building.
“I didn’t need to look far for a solution after explaining the situation to another contractor, who recommended Saniflo,” says Albanese.
Following a quick search on the Saniflo website, he called Saniflo Technical Support and explained the drainage issues. “That same day, I had the recommended Saniflo Sanicubic 2 Vortex unit on order from my supplier and ready to be shipped.”
Olde Anchor Bed & Breakfast | Sanicompact Dual-flush Macerating Toilet
While renovating their the 3,400-square-foot property during the recent pandemic, the owners of The Olde Anchor Bed & Breakfast in Murray River, Prince Edward Island, realized having a half-bath in each bedroom would be a huge convenience for guests, eliminating the need to share facilities.
For the half-bath installations, Mary Ritchie, a registered veterinary technician, and her fiancé Tony Reed, a retired home builder, avoided the difficulty of tearing up walls and floors in a heritage home by using Saniflo’s Sanicompact — a self-contained, dual-flush macerating toilet system designed specifically for small, tight spaces. This modern-looking, one-piece toilet is also engineered to use as little as one gallon per flush.
For the installation, Reed ran a one-inch discharge pipe from the Sanicompact in each bedroom. This discharge ran along the chimney line and then was tied into an existing plumbing line in the basement.
“The Sanicompact is better for the septic system in the way it reduces particles and waste,” says Ritchie. “Since we are on well water, we try to save as much water as possible. Ultra-low-flush, high-efficiency toilets are very crucial for us, especially with the number of guests we serve each season.”
“The quality of the product stands out, compared with other systems,” adds Reed, who adds that these successful installations at Olde Anchor have only motivated him to continue using Saniflo on the couple’s other properties.
Contemporary Coffee Shop | Sanicom 1 Drain Pump System
Alex Stoyle, owner of Revelstoke Coffee, a classic contemporary coffee shop in downtown Concord, New Hampshire, recently faced a major plumbing issue.
Leasing in an almost two-hundred-year-old building, Stoyle knew it would be challenging to install a conventional, below-floor pipeline to drain his equipment. It would require breaking through the floor — which wasn’t really an option, given the building’s age and the fact that there is a unit below them.
So Stoyle had to find an alternative solution that would permit drainage of all his shop’s equipment. The latter includes two espresso machines, a dishwasher, an ice machine, a three-base sink, two prep sinks, and a reverse osmosis water filter.
On a professional plumber’s recommendation, Stoyle chose to install Sanicom 1 drain pumps made by Saniflo. The Sanicom 1 can handle up to 194°F water, making it perfect for commercial kitchen applications where dishwashers must operate at exceptionally high temperatures to meet health and sanitation standards.
In addition, the Sanicom 1 is specially designed to withstand liquids with highly acidic properties, such as waste water from processing applications. The waste water enters the Sanicom 1 via a pair of 2-inch inlets, positioned low on either side of the pump housing to ease making connections.
The discharge elbow on top of the Sanicom1 can be rotated 360°, depending on the needs of the discharge line. A non-return valve provided with the system prevents backflow into the unit, with a vent connection on top. (All plumbing codes require a connection to a vent system.)
Stoyle reports that the system has performed well. “It’s hard to put a dollar value on it, but without these pumps, our business wouldn’t be operational,” says Stoyle. “Saniflo made the business possible, and the Sanicom 1 units have saved us time, money, and headaches.”
